There's a moment in nearly every difficult experience where we have a choice: feel it, or find a way around it.
Most of us have gotten very good at finding a way around it.
That's exactly what my conversation with Sophie Malahieude on this week's episode of Intuitive Wisdom got me thinking about.
Sophie is an Ayurveda and Yoga Consultant, Emotional Balance Life Coach, and author whose own path — shaped by living across France, Germany, and the United States — taught her something most of us never slow down enough to learn: emotions aren't the obstacle. They're the message.
Emotions Are Messages From Your Higher Self
Sophie's core idea is simple to say and much harder to live: your emotions are communication from your higher self. Not noise. Not weakness. Messages. The hard part, she says, isn't receiving them — it's trusting them enough to actually listen.
What Emotional Balance Really Means
Ask most people to define emotional balance and you'll hear some version of "staying calm" or "not overreacting." Sophie's definition is different, and better: emotional balance is partnering with your intuition. It's your ability to receive an experience and process it in a way that helps you move forward — not around, not away from, but forward, through.
Any experience brings emotion along with it. That's not a flaw in the system. That's the system working.
Feel First. Then Get Curious.
Sophie's process has two steps, and the order matters.
Step one: feel it. Before you analyze, explain, or fix — feel it.
Step two: get curious. Why is this feeling coming up now? What is it pointing toward?
That order matters because the process itself is where the message lives. Skip the feeling and jump straight to the analysis, and you miss what the emotion was actually trying to tell you.
Sophie describes emotion as sitting close to intuition — you follow it the way you'd follow a thread, to see where it leads. It's a connection, not a conclusion.
Balance Lives in the Body Too
One of the most striking parts of our conversation was Sophie's map of where emotion shows up physically:
Shoulders hold our boundaries
Chest and heart hold relationships and love
Belly holds fear
Knees hold direction
The body expresses what the mind has difficulty communicating. If you've ever felt inexplicably tight shoulders during a conflict, or a knot in your stomach before a decision you're avoiding — that's not a coincidence. That's information.
How to Be a Good Friend
Sophie also shared something I think about often now: talking with someone helps you move through the process faster — as long as it happens without judgment. And when someone you love is in it, the most powerful thing you can offer isn't a solution. It's presence. Be there. Listen. Don't try to fix it.
One Simple Tool: Grounding
If you take just one practice from this episode, let it be grounding. Simple, accessible, and available to you anytime you need to come back to yourself.
