So many of us are taught how to give.
We learn to show up for others, work hard, push through discomfort, and hold everything together. Giving becomes familiar. Comfortable, even.
But receiving?
Receiving can feel vulnerable.
In a recent alignment session with a coach, I experienced a shift that completely changed the way I think about receiving. I realized that the places in my life that once felt empty—the parts of me that longed for support, understanding, and deeper connection—had quietly become the foundation of my work.
The things I once needed most are now the things I create for others.
And in creating them, something unexpected happened: I became more capable of receiving them too.
That realization stayed with me because I think many of us move through life trying to “fix” our emptiness, when sometimes those spaces are actually pointing us toward our purpose.
A lot of people think receiving is passive. I don’t see it that way. It is leadership.
Receiving requires trust.
It asks us to soften enough to allow support in instead of constantly trying to earn it.
And often, our nervous systems resist that.
We deflect compliments.
We over-explain.
We apologize for needing help.
We feel guilty resting.
We struggle to accept kindness without trying to immediately give something back.
These reactions may seem small, but energetically they reveal something deeper: many of us do not fully feel safe receiving.
The good news is that receiving is something we can practice.
Not through giant life changes, but through small moments of openness.
Receiving a compliment without dismissing it.
Allowing someone to help you.
Accepting rest without guilt.
Noticing abundance instead of scarcity.
These tiny moments begin teaching the nervous system that support is safe.
And over time, those moments build a new energetic pattern.
One of the biggest lessons I’m learning right now is this:
When we create what we once needed, we make it real.
We become part of the energy we were searching for.
And often, in the process of giving it to others, we finally become available to receive it ourselves.
So if receiving feels uncomfortable for you, start gently.
Ask yourself:
Where can I allow support in?
Because you do not have to carry everything alone. And when you learn to receive, it gives others permission as well.
