264 November Insights with Christina

What Knitting Taught Me About Letting Things Be Imperfect

I picked up knitting this fall, and it has been teaching me more than I expected.

I normally want to control it all. I hold high standards for myself and I don't love producing something that falls short of them.

Knitting does not care.

My patterns are wonky, and I can see the mistakes. Every time I spot one, I get a small, honest choice: unravel it, quit, or keep going and see what happens.

In this month's Insights conversation, my friend Christina Slaback gave this a name. The creativity gap is the space between the vision you hold and your current skill level.

When you are new at something, your taste is ahead of your hands. Many of us hit that gap and decide the thing isn't for us, because we can't sit in the discomfort of not being good right away.

What I'm learning is to stay. I still love the piece. I still value the time I put in. And I own the choice to move forward with it.

The same gap shows up in business. This fall I opened a new service line, Virtual Operations & Podcast Support, and started YouTube Lives. Both are new, and both put me in the gap. I'm practicing what the knitting taught me: allow the growth, and own the value I bring even at this level.

When everything feels stuck. In October, there were a couple of weeks when nothing seemed to move, in business and in life. I treated it as a reflection rather than a verdict. I journaled, I found new mantras, and I asked what I needed more of: rest, water, movement, or belief in myself. The answer that kept returning was belief. Success is inevitable, and I hadn't been acting like it.

Consistency without rigidity. Christina shared that she has released the strict schedule she created for herself. A podcast episode going out five hours or a day later is still consistency, because you are still coming back to what matters to you. I made a similar shift this month, trading a daily calendar for a weekly one. If a task doesn't get done, I circle it and move on, then pick up circled items when there's room.

Consume, then integrate. I love learning, and I'm usually listening to a podcast or reading a book. There is a point where you've learned enough and it's time to go inward and integrate so you can create from that. Christina put it beautifully, and I've been thinking about it ever since.

Looking ahead to November. We both want slowness before the holidays, not as stopping, but as grounding before we spend energy in other ways. We also talked about retrograde season, which many people dread. Christina's view is that it's an invitation to revisit projects, conversations, and seeds planted earlier in the year, and decide what is worth moving forward. Deeper roots make a stronger new chapter.

Christina pulled a card for us, and it was a message of rest. Spirit agrees with this conversation.

Journal prompts:

  • Where am I in the creativity gap right now, and what would staying in it look like?

  • What do I need more of this month?

  • What seeds from earlier this year are worth revisiting?
